Murphy’s law at work

30 July, 2006 Leave a comment

Most of you all know what Murphy’s best contribution to the human race was. In fact he found out that if an object will break or go wrong, it will aways happen when you don’t expect it to happen.

Turns out he was always correct because humans in general don’t want things to be broken. And we only know an object is broken when we use it. Thus his teory is ALWAYS correct in saying it will “always break when we use it”.

Anyway I was out on RedBox only to come back wanting to continue my work when the CRT I was using started emitting clicking noise intermittenly. Then it started to dim before ending itself with a flat white line on the screen. Talk about a heart CRD machine.

So it was an emergency as I promised a friend I’ll get the program working by night so had to go out and get a replacement ASAP. Murphy was hard at work again as none of the nearby shops were open. Imagine that some one on the street was desparate, loaded with cash, MUST get a monitor and they are all closed. That really does it.

Anyway I don’t wanna drive down to LowYat (maybe they should start doing deliveries) and went all the way back to Kajang to get one. After driving around town asking locals on where are all the computers shops I finally found a shop almost closing. Other than ramming the car into their front door I did the next best thing and shouted “wait for me!” out the car window.

They were so surprised and I didn’t even need to bargain for it as they were ready to go. They opened a price lower than lowyat’s 650 and I bought it just there. No hagling required.

Anyway it was a 17″ Samsung 740N and so far it was performing way better than I expected.

So far so good.

My FCM is going down!

21 July, 2006 1 comment

Wa.. what a day. Just finished my first FCM test and the tension is unbelievable. Especially now after the test.
THe test was dramatically more difficult that the previous semester. Consiracy teories start flying that the lecturer hates us, also got a version that says we got the harder question because we seen the previous test paper and are well prepared for it.

I asked the lecturer and he said we should get a equavalent difficulity level as we’re now in Level 2. However many don’t fell the same way as him.

I was thinking of rewarding myself after the test but I don’t think I deserved it cause personally I don’t think I did great in the test. Am just going to take a hot bath and go to sleep. Maybe after stressing myslf out tomorrow in Gym I’ll feel better.

New world of economics

18 July, 2006 Leave a comment

I just read a copy of In Tech with an article on how some goverments want to take action against some companies for price fixing. Memory Chip price fixing in fact.

Actually, to us consumers, there is nothing wrong if they fix a lower price for products that they have a surplus of. I mean it’s a part of business strategy that someone build a lot of factories churning out large quantities of memory chips and then selling it lower than their competitors.

You cannot call it price fixing for if competitor A sells lower 10 cents and you proceed to sell it 10 cents lower too!

Maybe to some goverments, it can only be called good business practice if everyone got to earn a profit. Monopolies like Microsoft or Samsung are always the ones they target with some stupid terms like monopolising the market (as if it’s not a good thing) because they earn a lot and small companies cannot come into the market. But have they ever think that they were so strong now is because they have a good business plan! Microsoft once started small too compared to IBM.

All those laws concerning monopoly or price fixing are written with an old mindset. Their mindset is that monopoly are bad for creativity because if they don’t improve, us poor consumers will not get a better product. However the new thinking in town is that Monopolies like Microsoft often have to fight against their own product. Just like XP and Vista.

Monopoly companies like Microsoft often have a established customer base and by mean of customer are those who are using their software. And it’s so good that they don’t want to change them. Therefore if Microsoft want to earn more $, they would have to create a better product to compell those customers in upgrading. Just like XP and Vista. So the argument that no competitor means no innovation are not correct.

Anyway back to the price fixing case, it’s just the same thing. Samsung just wanted to have a more market share by using their wealth of factories to product more chips thus pushing down their productio costs so they can be sold cheaper. They probably fixed the price lower as a form of bargain chip to secure better deals. So what’s wrong when they sell it cheaper than market price (which itself can be another form of debate as to it’s determination), and they are offering original high performance chips. Those who don’t buy from such companies are losers.

But since they got sued I guess the “market price” for RAM’s won’t be any lower now. As no one is allowed to sell their stuff lower anymore. It will be a long wait for affordable chips.

Top 10 worst domain name list

16 July, 2006 1 comment

Everyone knows that if you are going to operate a business in today’s world you need a domain name. It is advisable to look at the domain name selected as other see it and not just as you think it looks.

Failure to do this may result in situations such as the following (legitimate) companies who deal in everyday humdrum products and services but clearly didn’t give their domain names enough consideration:

1. A site called ‘Who Represents‘ where you can find the name of the agent that represents a celebrity. Their domain name… wait for it… is
www.whorepresents.com

2. Experts Exchange, a knowledge base where programmers can exchange advice and views at
www.expertsexchange.com

3. Looking for a pen? Look no further than Pen Island at
www.penisland.net

4. Need a therapist? Try Therapist Finder at
www.therapistfinder.com

5. Then of course, there’s the Italian Power Generator company…
www.powergenitalia.com

6. And now, we have the Mole Station Native Nursery, based in New South Wales (that’s in Australia):
www.molestationnursery.com

7. If you’re looking for computer software, there’s always
www.ipanywhere.com

8. Welcome to the First Cumming Methodist Church. Their website is
www.cummingfirst.com

9. Then, of course, there’s these brainless art designers, and their whacky website:
www.speedofart.com

10. Want to holiday in Lake Tahoe? Try their brochure website at
www.gotahoe.com
