Final test

28 August, 2006 Leave a comment

Tomorrow would be my final test. Subject: Professional Development.

Actually no matter what the subject is, it doesn’t matter because I’ll still need to do my revision for it. Subject only matters when considering how long I’ll need to be studying.

Honestly I really have no idea on what to study for PD. Though the slides contain the basic information, but there’s only so much to be gleaned from it. As PD is a subject that requires good general knowledge of the outside world sometimes reading the newspaper would be a better idea. In fact for the test, it requires we have a good critical evaluation skills. The more the better.

Anyhow, after tomorrow everyone would probably be a little relieve that another hurdle is over.

Looking back at the past week. I find out that I didn’t really put much effort into my studies. Maybe I’m distracted or maybe I’m just a bit lazy after the stressful week of assignment submission.

Am a bit disappointed with my PD test 1 results though. I only got half of the total 20 marks for test 1. Hopefully for PD test 2 (which is 40 marks), I’ll get more than 50%.

After Tuesday will probably spend some time cleaning my so called “study haven”. Before the studies it was clean and neat but now looking at it, it looks more like a warzone with paper and notes everywhere. Hahahaha.. that’s the common habit of a hardworking, self absorbed bachelor. Cleaning it depends on what comes first, either I get a nightmare about my notes eating me up or I got a Genie to help me do it.. :P

Time to go back to my studies.. till then..

Teaching Styles

I overheard a friend of my mothers when we went visiting yesterday.

She was busy teaching her son on the differences between a male and female chicken. But as the concept is still new to the child, he just keep getting them mixed up.

As a result, the mother was starting to shreak and becoming frantic that her son might never be able to tell the difference (that’s how far into the future she foresees).

Anyway as a punishment she made her son repeat 10 times that mother hen’s lay eggs. 20 for the next time he forgot and 30 time etc.

I wasn’t there when he reaches 50 but the point is that the mother would be sending the wrong message across. It’s true when they say everyone can be a good mother but not everyone can be a good teacher.

The way the mother help the child remember the simple point by repeating himself only works if the values or context doesn’t change. Like a multiplication table; or telling the time like say 5 comes after 4.

But for real world concepts like biology and  the living world, it just don’t work. Given that he might remember the fact that mother hen lays eggs. Fine. But that is also through memorizing and not really through understanding.

It’s what people call “old school study”.

The same kid when given a duck would probably take it as something new and would need to repeat another 30 times just so he will remember. How many times must he do that for every object in the world before finding out a connection between them all.

Referring to the mother, what she should do is to make him understand that in the world, most of the females gives birth. Maybe a good reference to the difference between egg laying and young birthing would be good. Birds and the bees can wait.

That way the kid would understand and would be able to apply that to anything he encounters.

It’s things that one doesn’t know that make us wonder and want to know more and not how to spell “hen” and “eggs” that drives us.

Actually I wonder how many school teachers really understand this concept. I mean some good mothers (~ bad teachers) do work in schools.

Went for my Uni’s Multicultural night yesterday. The venuw was surprisingly posh for a third time event.
Some nice pictures were strictly P&C hahah so cannot post here. However I do have some videos to share.

Below is a video of a Fusion dance (the best show of the night) with indian and hip hop culture in the mix.

The next 1 is a video of a super hot dude showing off his moves.

Fish Pet Project

I’ve added more fishes into the tank. Only today do I get the time to really take some photos of them.

Below are the notorious Bandaraya Fish. Also called Vacuum Cleaner.

More pictures of Bandaraya. This time on the glass.

Below are some schools of fishes. They swim fast and it’s hard to get a good shot of them. Maybe they should be called water runners instead.

I got an angel fish in there too. But just 1 and it’s a bit lonely in there. Maybe if there’s time and $$ I’ll get more. for company.

Below are the angel but under UV light. Usually it’s on at night but then just for the photoshoot, you can see the scales that are illuminated glowing brightly.

Exam month

20 August, 2006 Leave a comment

I just finished my fcm test on Friday. Now that being a relief I’m not so sure about it when I get back my results.

Maths (FCM is a math subject) has never been a strong point in me. Ever since secondary school my maths is always the culprit for pulling my marks low. Therefore I’m not having any great expectations for FCM. A pass will make me high on cloud nine, seriously.

Anyway looking forward the final euphoria seems so far away. the next week will officially be the last week of class, followed by a buffer week for replacement class and followed by a study week before having the exams on the 4th week.

So exams are still a month away. Fortunately there’s only a handful of subjects with FCM too notwithstanding. I really hope I get that pass. Hahaha…

Anyway I was browsing the web and I saw this children card game being offered for sale. Mr Saw (our FCM lecturer) must be playing with it since he was 3 years old.

That guy is just so freaking smart that I sometimes wondered if he went for special intensive training in some secret temple for 10 years in China. Doing internal calculations in differentiations and trigonometry and all.
