Sightseeing on the WWW

26 October, 2006 1 comment

Went visiting on the internet for some old moments of history earlier. I still cannot believe how much the internet have progressed from something that hosted just plain infomation to another entity that served infomation; in a form of service too!

Did some some Googling based on search phrases such as geocities+personal. It will usually return a list of personal websites hosted by Geocities. Modify the term to get other results.

I saw some of those old abandoned geocities sites, places where the advertistment bar looks more advanced that the site. There were many sites that used to be the fame and glory of old school techie’s. The very first i-babies that started creating sites that they can claim as their own.

Also seen are the technology behind it. Embed was widely used to stream in midi, flash is almost not in existence. Animated GIF were however aplenty. Those perpetual looping constructs are really cool then but looks like some ugly McD singboards that rotate on signposts nowadays.

Also missing on sites those days are the application of modern day HCI. Back in those days you always try to hide the obvious which would make the site look cool. In fact if you can make a totally black background with everything embedded, hidden, or scrolling in some white bars, you’re good.

The result of that is I found lots of midi streams that cannot be turned off, GIF animation for even the simplest buttons. White fonts on Black backgrounds. Purple fonts on Blue backgrounds. Frames! lots and lots of frames!

Well, those were the days of static content. Even now I still see a lot of sites which were simplistic in nature but efficient. The only difference is they were usualy corporate sites. (Shocks!)

Somehow the deep pockets of a company are usually not bothered to update their site or make it a portal of their company. Seems like the first impression rule don’t apply here. Imagine the Sony website only displays a long list of authorised resellers and another page with “About Us”. Nothing else. What would others think of Sony’s ability to host other online portals such as their Connnect music store? Can’t blame the execs’ though. They were in the business sector and websites are in the IT sector.

Anyway the trend of the latest being always the consumers are still true. All the latest ajax sites, CSS based portals, coolest Web2.0 applications are mostly found on personal sites, educational sites and sites that offer services such as youTube, search providers (Google) and the usual forums and blogs.

It’s a very nice trip to bring back some good old memories. I also went sightseeing on places that I used to hang out in, forums that I helped start and close down, chatrooms that no longer are active, class forums that are deserted and so on.

Remembering the days of ICQ (anyone still using that bloatware?), I went back to the site and checked out some old friends personal site and surprisingly, they were still there. Just that the info was some years old now.

What I like and dislike about Company of Heroes

22 October, 2006 2 comments

Like: Very infomative and comprehensive tutorial.
Dislike: Super damn long tutorial with lots of clicks on “continue”!

Like: Very nice graphics with every element set to either Ultra, High, Medium or Low. No more scrolling bars with range of values to choose from.
Dislike: Long loading time because the game loads the video and all game data pre-processed. I timed my fastest loading time at 30 seconds under Skirmish settings (no video).

Like: Totally cool engine with RTS view on the furthest zoom (can see the entire sector) and 3rd person on the closest view (can see individual ranks and badges on troop’s shoulder). Ability to rotate camera freely.
Dislike: No point zooming in other than to observe the enemy HQ being blast wide open head on. This is an RTS afterall.

Like: Realistic Line of sight. Terrain plays a role.
Dislike: Tank corpes can create bottlenecks on roads. Fallen lampost’s hinder tank movements, craters hinder troop movements. Both good and bad.

Like: Totally realistic 3d world. Every building can be blast to it’s foundation. Every tree and lamposts can be destroyed either accidentally (bomb blast) or deliberately to create rubble to slow down troops.
Dislike: Tank rams everything through to destination. Even my newly built walls for self defense. Damn blind driver.

Like: First few campaign missions are like mini tutorials. Easy on the beginner.
Dislike: All WW2 games starts off on Omaha beach.

Like: Limited troops and building reduces complexity while maintaining a realistic WW2 army capability.
Dislike: After choosing a branch for special suport deployment (air, armor or troops), player have to stick with it for the entire mission.

Like: Engineers finally got their own guns (flame thrower!) for self defence! Finally!
Dislike: Engineers cannot repair their own shelter (civilian buildings) while they themself are inside it.

Like: Realistic weapons selection. Diverse options available for different troops. Grunts can throw grenades and sachel charges while machine gunners can only select armor piercing rounds.

Like: Grunts can pick up weapons and form a new platoon separate from previous group.

Like: Grunts (airborne) can self reinforce their own platoon back to maximum amount when near an allied building.

Like: Can designate any allied building as front barracks. No more training troops are the other end of the map.

Like: The ability to cut off enemy’s supply and watch then die of starvation. Non connected sectors do not serve ay purpose.
Dislike: The enemy can do the same and cut of my supply line too by grabbing supply areas from my control.

Like: No cheating by enemy. When I take control of all supply sectors on the map, they will not get secret funds to continue building. The base will be totally devoid of all construction! Finally!

Like: Realistic scale. Troops next to tanks looks really darn vulnerable.
Dislike: 100 teams of machine gunners cannot kill off a Panzer tank after 5 minutes unless I equip them with AP rounds.

Like: Tanks no longer have problems killing infantry unlike aka Stupid Starcraft, Red Alert, Tiberian Sun. Instead 1 shot will scatter them all over the map with a crater to show you where they were before. However to balance the game they won’t die instantly but will take them time to come back and re-set up their weapons. Nicely balance factor I would say.

Like: Tanks have vulnerable spots so that flanking them from behind do actually mean they are more easily disposed off.
Dislike: Unpredictable tank damage. Sometimes it’s “engine failure”, sometimes it’s “main gun down”, sometimes it’s “gunner killed”, sometimes goes “out of control” (WTH?!).

Like: All ofensive units and buildings got range of fire. Bunkers need to be placed in the right direction. Machine Gunners need to be deployed facing the right direction too.
Dislike: Enemies coming in from behind will not be attacked unless I redeploy. Both good and bad. Means I can sneak up behind enemy lines.

Like: Like the voice overs with profanities. “Where the fuck are my reinforcements?! I need them right now!” “Shove a grenade down their throats!”
Dislike: Who the hell is Jerry?!

Like: Resources are given to you every second. The more supply sectors you control, the more resources you get.

Like: Fast recharge for special abilities.

Like: Ability to use special bonuses without needing $$. Troops can keep throwing grenades after they recharge. I can call in long range artillery strikes after they recharge.

Like: Awesome artillery effects.

Dislike: Scripted artillery attack on my god damn town center on mission 3 even without any enemy moving away from the point they materialise in from up north. (Thanks to 80 Machine Gunners 35 Anti Tanks’s and 40 Mortar teams surrounding them) ;)

Like: Lots of movies sequences to pull the campaign along.

Long breaks

18 October, 2006 Leave a comment

Weather: Hazy
Mood: Bored to bones
Reason: Had a 3 hours break that ended up doing nothing useful.
Main Article: Stupid timetable had us taking 3.5 hours long breaks between classes. Had nothing better to do but to go somewhere far and less frequent for lunch. Decided upon MidValley. Went to Oasis for lunch. Met Aivie there (surprising me). Wanted to get a book but forgot about it halfway while looking at other interesting objects (ahem ahem). After lunch basically did nothing for the remainder of the 2 hours until we ended up back at college.
Summary: Never ever forget to bring a laptop on long breaks.
