Denise Winery Visit

27 September, 2008 3 comments

Couple of weeks ago a buddy of mine invited some of us to pay a visit to his new establishment for some wine tasting cum friends gathering party.

^ There’s a cozy corner to drink from while you stare at empty bottles from people who had more dough than you.

The idea sounds interesting as I’ve yet to master the exotic art of drinking fermented grape juice wine. Since the place is about 15 minutes from where I worked it was an OK LET’S OK moment the second I got the invite.

^ Not your rave party glasses.

Not sure if there’s a list of requirements you need to fulfil before Denise actually sells you the franchise rights but the place is all equipped for all sorts or drinking manner. There’s even MTV on show or if you prefer, Hi-Def jazz to give that comfy atmosphere a little fluff.

Xi Wen was already there with his colleagues when I arrived. Seems like quite a nice place for some social networking

^ Not our bartender either!

As usual with this circle of friends, everyone was late so we decided to pop a bottle to merry up the games while we waited. My buddy had handpicked a couple of highly recommended (now by me as well) table wine that’s inexpensive and still taste good for our virgin tongue. We’re not wine connoisseur’s anyway and not pretending we are.

^ That’s my buddy making short work of the seal. No Naruto jokes please.

I believe it’s called Asti and I hope that’s the name of the wine, or it could be the place where the grape was grown, or the brand of the bottle, or simply the founder of that particular fermentation method. Argh!! Wines are so confusing!

^ Our Asti or Zonin, or whatever..

^ I’m just calling mine 7-Up

We weren’t drunk when the games started but since I’m taking photos, the average blogger won’t know whether it’s pre or post drinks anyway.

I got my fair share of embarrassing moment with our non bartender up there (for both of us anyway, crazy game) but since I have sufficient blackmail materials on hand on the proprietors anyway, my secrets are safe.

^ Norman and friend will need counselling for the rest of their lives.

When the main entourage of friends finally arrived, we moved on to the main bottles. There are some nice bottles and not so nice bottles, and I mean them literally. Some bottles look to be cK or Prada designed while others look like Ribenna castaways.

But what’s precious are the contents anyway and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed myself with them, trying out every little sip of the world.

I’m inclined to do promo on my blog but since it’s my buddy’s business so nokira~la! In any case anyone of you wants to get some great wine or simply looking for a great place to gather and take embarrassing photos, do visit:

What would you do?

27 September, 2008 Leave a comment

You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy night, when you pass by a bus stop, and you see three people waiting for the bus:

1. An old lady who looks as if she is about to die.

2. An old friend who once saved your life.

3. The perfect partner you have been dreaming about.

Which one would you choose to offer a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger in your car?

Think before you continue reading…

This is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually used as part of a job application. You could pick up the old lady, because she is going to die, and thus you should save her first; Or, you could take the old friend because he once saved your life, and this would be the perfect chance to
pay him back. However, you may never be able to find your perfect mate again.

The candidate who was hired (out of 200 applicants) had no trouble coming up with his answer. He simply answered: “I would give the car keys to my old friend and let him take the lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait for the bus with the partner of my dreams.”

Sometimes, we gain more if we are able to give up our stubborn thought limitations. Never forget to “Think Outside of the Box.”

Moral of the story is? Nobody ever answers the question.

Rant on train wrecks

27 September, 2008 Leave a comment

As many have heard there was this LRT crash in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday.

As I went over the reports from the field I can’t help notice how ignorant many are and how fast they jump to conclusion.

First of all this wasn’t some horrific high speed smashed to smithereens crash with a 100% KO rate we’re talking about. For those who don’t know better, the LRT tracks in Bukit Jalil is elevated and for starters the trains didn’t even jump track as officials are able to tow the trains away much later. Also, the final casualty rate is NONE dead, 2 injured and 4 hospitalized (and 3 discharged just as quickly as they got in, no MC for you!). Many simply walked back to the closest station.

Secondly, looking back at past histories, trains are still the safest way to travel, or if you believe the flying man in red underwear, flying is safe too!

So when people start panicking and says that taking trains is not safe anymore as crashes happens to buses and cars, never trains and the recent crash had shattered their ideal perception, I wish his boss will let him work from home or he’ll be walking to work in the foreseeable future.

Some reporters went for the obvious and interviewed some students barely out of shock and reports that drivers should abide by the allowed speed limit. Problem is nobody was speeding to anywhere when they crashed. The train simply stopped 200m from the train station before being rammed by another train from the rear… on the same track!

I can only imagine that if you stopped suddenly and got whacked seconds after that by another train on the same track, you are going to get whacked no matter where you stop. I know we wanted trains to come in closer intervals but not that close! And definitely not 200m away from the station. What happened can only be described as Railway Tycoon FAIL.

Even funnier is some outstation folks start calling their sons and daughters to beware of trains and to take regular busses and taxis instead. Well unless statistics are phony, taxis and busses have a higher accident rate than trains, the casualty rate is just as bad too! Now if only everyone would start taking busses and taxis and leave the trains to people who understand basic math’s then just maybe it wouldn’t be such a sardine can everyday.

Tough luck, today was just as packed.
