What does the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland call itself?
Sometimes just the United Kingdom, the UK, or Britain, or Great Britain, or GB, or the British Isles, Or England / Wales / Scotland / Northern Ireland (sometimes Ulster). And then you have crown dependencies such as the Isle of Man, Jersey and Guernsey which are territorially related and have the Queen as head of state.. but are not part of the UK. To make life more complicated, the “British Isles” sometimes includes the island of Ireland, and sometimes not (so you can also say “The British and Irish Isles”. The term “Great Britain” is given both to the largest island in the archipelago and the union of Scotland, Wales and Ireland plus all the smaller offshore islands that make up those countries. These terms all mean something slightly different.. the UK is not the same as Great Britain which is usually not the same as the British Isles (but sometimes it is) which is not the same as England or any other country. Oh, and Northern Ireland isn’t a country.. but the Republic of Ireland (Eire) is an independent country which also happens to be in the British Isles (or British and Irish Isles).
